The Rise of NRL22: Precision Shooting for Everyone

Practical precision

Discover how rimfire competition brings the intense pressure, barricades, and targets of long-range matches to local ranges, making practical precision accessible to any shooter.

If PRS is the "Formula 1" of shooting, NRL22 is the "Spec Miata"—it’s accessible, intensely competitive, and arguably the best training ground for any hunter. The goal is simple: hit small steel targets with a .22 LR at distances out to 200 yards (and sometimes beyond).

The Ultimate Trainer: The T1x MTR

The Tikka T1x MTR (Multi-Task Rimfire) is the "straight-talk" king of this circuit. Why? Because it shares the exact same footprint as your T3x. This is the "Competitor’s Secret." If your "big gun" for the deer woods or the PRS circuit is a T3x, your trainer should be a T1x. The trigger, the safety, and the ergonomics are identical. When you spend 500 rounds a month on the NRL22 circuit with a T1x, you are building "muscle honesty" that transfers directly to your T3x. You aren't learning two different systems; you’re perfecting one.

NRL22 Mindset: Managing the "Mini-Wind"

Shooting a .22 LR at 150 yards is like shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor at 800. The wind moves that little lead pill with authority. To win in NRL22, you have to be a student of ballistics.

  • The Barrel: The T1x uses a crossover barrel profile. It’s heavy enough to provide the stability you need for precision, but light enough to move quickly during the "run-and-gun" stages of an NRL match.
  • The Magazine: In the heat of a match, you don't want to fumble with tiny rimfire mags. The T1x magazine is designed to be substantial, easy to grip with gloves, and—most importantly—flawless in its feeding.

Why "Production" Matters in Rimfire

Just like in the big-bore world, NRL22 has a Base Class. This keeps the "gear race" in check and puts the focus where it belongs: on the shooter. A factory-stock T1x is a giant-killer in the Base Class. You don't need a $2,000 custom rimfire to stand on the podium. You need a Tikka, a decent optic with a "tree" reticle for holds, and the discipline to practice your positional shooting.

Straight Talk for the New Competitor

Don't wait until you're a "pro" to enter a match. The NRL22 and PRS communities are some of the most approachable in the shooting world. Show up with your T1x or your T3x CTR, tell the guys it’s your first match, and you’ll find five people willing to lend you a bag or help you dial your dope.

In nature, and on the range, the target doesn't care about your ego. It only cares about the impact. Trust the Tikka action, respect the fundamentals, and get on the clock.
